About
Megan Smirti Ryerson holds a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. She received a MS in Information and Telecommunication Systems from Johns Hopkins University (2005) and a BS in Systems Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania (2003). Her research focus is on planning intercity transportation to meet competing passenger service, economic, and environmental objectives. In her thesis research, Dr. Ryerson develops analytic total logistics cost functions to describe how vehicle technologies can be leveraged to serve passengers and freight with heterogeneous values of time over an intercity transportation corridor, and how this solution changes with fuel price or environmental policy. She also develops rigorous econometric cost models to characterize intercity transportation system costs and their interaction with inputs related to environmental concern, such as fuel. Megan has made both methodological contributions to empirical and analytic continuum approximation total logistics cost modeling and applied contributions to support an environmentally and economically sustainable transportation system.
Dr. Ryerson is a recognized expert in the impact of environmental and operational policies on the aviation system. As a graduate student at UC Berkeley she gained experience working on projects of importance to Caltrans/UCTC, FAA and NASA, and has strong working relationships with members of those agencies. She regularly consults on aviation and environmental issues for a wide range of organizations including the Regional Plan Association in support of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the State of California Office of the Attorney General, and Resource Systems Group in support of the National Academies. Megan also has extensive experience consulting for Federal clients (including the Department of the Army and the Office of the Secretary of Defense) as a Senior Consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton.
